Consequent to development of the DDR2, DDR3 memory module, DDR PC2700 memory module is the slowest DDR memory module available in the market today. The PC2700 memory module has now replaced the slower memory module PC1600 and PC 2100. It is basically designed to work with computer systems with front side bus speed of 166MHz. PC2700 is backward compatible memory module and thus can be used with the systems having slower memory module. However, when used with slower memory modules, the system speed actually restricted to that of slower module speed even though the DDR PC2700 memory module is having higher speed. While using the memory module of different types, care must be taken that the memory modules used are of same type. The number 2700 in DDR PC2700 type memory module indicates the peak transfer rate in mega bytes per second.
The bandwidth achieved with DDR memory module is double than that of earlier SDRAM module without increasing the clock frequency. High bandwidth is obtained by transferring the data at both rising and falling edges of the clock. DDR memory is available in DIMM as well SO - DIMM packages for desktop and notebook computer respectively. The DIMM packaged memory module is very similar to that of SDRAM module except that it has 184 pins as against the 168 pins and can be easily differentiated with the number of notches. The DDR memory is having superior power consumption characteristics than that of SDRAM modules as it uses power at 2.5 volts against 3.3 volt used by SDRAM modules. Based on effective clock frequency of 333MHz, DDR PC2700 memory is also available in market as DDR-333.
